How To Prepare For Dental Extractions

Every person fears losing their teeth. Unfortunately, dental extractions might be the only way to solve your problem, especially if you are going through immense pain. How do you get ready for a dental extraction procedure if that's the case? Relax. Here are some pointers that should help you get ready for that important appointment.

Ask Questions

Most people fear dental extractions simply because they don't know what goes on. Luckily, asking the right questions can help reduce the fear. So, don't be afraid to talk to your dentist before the appointment. Ask how the process goes, how long it should take, and how you can prepare for the procedure. The answers to these queries should help you remain calm and comfortable.

Share Your Medical History

Dentists recommend sharing your medical history prior to a tooth extraction procedure. Sadly, most people don't share this information, and it's quite risky. You are required to share all the information pertaining to conditions such as:

  • Liver disease
  • Bacterial endocarditis
  • Impaired immune system
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Mechanical heart valves

Avoid Eating Before the Extraction

If possible, you should refrain from eating anything for a few hours before the procedure. If you have to, just take foods that can be digested and absorbed pretty fast. This way, you won't have to worry about nausea or vomiting during and after the procedure. Additionally, you might want to stop smoking for a few hours before the extraction procedure and a couple of days after.

Choose Your Outfit Wisely

As much as you like wearing nice outfits, you should remember that the dentist's office can get messy. As such, you should avoid bright clothes, jewelry, contact lenses, and long-sleeved shirts. If possible, wear some old, dull clothes as you'd have no problem if blood or IV drips on them. Luckily, your dentist will be extra careful not to stain your clothes.

Stock Up on Soft Foods

You'll have to survive on soft foods for the next few days once your tooth is extracted. As such, you'll need to buy as many soft foods as possible. Don't risk buying hard-to-chew foods as they might hurt your gum. Some of the soft foods you should stock up on are:

  • Chicken broth
  • Yogurt
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Vegetable soup
  • Ice Cream

Get Painkillers

You definitely need painkillers as soon as the anesthesia starts to wear off. Therefore, you should buy some strong painkillers just in case you need them for the next few days.

Speak with a dentist before the procedure to find out more.
